The album's closer, the blues-inflected "16th Street Baptist Church," is powered by Eric Revis' smoky pasacaglia on the bass. Beyond his work as a recording artist, Branford has also joined the faculty of Michigan State University in East Lansing, MI, where he teaches in the school's jazz studies department. He has also begun working as a Creative Consultant with Columbia Records' Jazz Department, signing new talent and providing creative input into the development of several artists on the label.
Other projects which he has produced include forthcoming albums by singer Frank McComb and pianist Joey Calderazzo.
In the months ahead, Branford will be back out on the road, playing his music across the country and throughout the world. Though he's had his share of pain, Branford has the right perspective. But when I think about the good fortune I've had, the great family I have, I know I'm a very lucky man. If there are any serious flaws in the playing, they will escape the vast majority of ears out there, for this is an uncompromising, well-played disc of acoustic jazz that leans a bit toward adventure at times.
But with "Lykief" -- a pun on Keith Jarrett's name -- Branford takes up Jarrett's long unanswered challenge and pushes through a tumbling, nearly rhythmically free piece attractively anchored by Jarrett's gospel harmonies and melodic methods. Once again, the post-Tonight Show, post-Buckshot Marsalis makes a credibly serious jazz statement in what turned out to be the swan song for one of the neo-bop era's finest lineups. Branford Marsalis. Cheek To Cheek. Skip to main content. Together they provide that mix of restlessness and assurance, of knowledge and inquiry, which the leader and the music demand. This music has its visceral and emotional rewards, but it also provides new perspectives and provokes fresh responses. I never forgot that. One guy is even constantly sending me emails with Tain titles. And since he and his band are so highly skilled at communicating their vision, his fans can consider themselves equally lucky.
This is not an obvious choice, and is definitely not the easy way out, for a musician who, as he turns 40, has already enjoyed two decades of rbanford and celebrity.
